Bets are the most critical part of poker; any successful poker player should know everything there is to know about bets. In this article we discuss the different types of bets in poker.

Ante bets

An ante is a compulsory bet which has to be made by all the players even before the cards are dealt. An ante bet is the size of the minimum bet amount in a game or sometimes even lower than that. This type of bet is made to create the initial pot and get the other players to play longer in a hand and bet more in the pot. These bets are very common in the draw and stud poker games are not used in the games that have blind bets. In some poker tournaments both types of bets are used. In some poker variations the dealer would change each turn and ante bets are quite commonly used there.

Blind bets

A blind bet is a compulsory bet which has to be made by a few players before the cards are dealt. This helps stimulate players to stay longer in a hand. In several poker variations there are two blinds, small and big. As a rule, this bet is made by the first player who is seated to the left of the dealer and is half the amount of the big blind. The big blind has to be made by the second player seated to the left of the dealer and would be equal to the lowest betting amount as per the rules of the game. This type of betting structure is quite common in hold’em games and is sometimes even used in Omaha. Some games even use a three blind structure, in which the first blind is made by the dealer.

Bring-ins

This is a compulsory bet which has to be made before the players place their bets but after the cards are dealt. These are usually made by the player who has the highest or the lowest rank cards dealt face up. This bet is usually applied in an open round of betting in games where antes are used rather than the structured blinds. As an example, in stud games bring ins are used for the player with the lowest face up card during the first betting round. The amount of this bet would be the same as the minimum betting amount.

In some poker games any new player that joins the table that has already been playing would have to place a bet equal to the big blind or the lowest betting amount. The player who misses the chance to put the blind for any reason also has to post whenever he/she returns to the table to play.
