Rules of Poker Checking and Betting

The gamblers in poker games usually act one by one clockwise around the table. Before the first bet is placed in round the poker players can use poker checking (to pass the turn to act not placing any chips into the pot) or open round (that means to post the first bet). Now the gamblers can call the previous bet by posting the same quantity of chips into the game pot; raise by increasing the previous bet; or fold that means to give up the cards and loose interest in the game pot. So, consider poker checking and other betting actions in details.

Open

Opening betting round means to make the first optional bet in the betting round, at the beginning of the round or after poker checking. In the poker games with the blinds these compulsory bets open the round and the next player have chance to only call or raise the previous bet. There are different poker rules that say that the poker player, for instance, has to have some certain cards or add different amounts into the pot in order to open the round.

Call

To call the bet means to match the previously made raise or bet. According to the poker rules each round of betting is counted to be completed as soon as all the gamblers at the table have put the equal sums into the pot after re-raises and raises (or after poker checking options chosen by all players). Several calls made on one bet are called the overcalls. In case the player that holds low hand calls the bet this is known as a crying call.

Check

If the round was not opened the poker player may choose poker checking. In fact poker checking option means that the gambler call the currant bet with zero. When the poker player checks he/she does not put the chips to the pot but stays in the game and now it is the turn of the other poker player to act. In case all players at the table chose poker checking option the round of betting is completed.

Raise

This option means that the player may increase the size of the previous bet and force other gambler to call this raise to stay in this game. If the gambler decides to raise the last raise this is known as re-raise. Usually the amount of the raise is equal to the size of the preceding raise or bet. In addition, in some of the poker variants with the spread-limit and fixed-limit structures the possible quantity of raises in each round of betting is limited. In the no-limit and pot-limit games there are no such restrictions.

Fold

This action means to forfeit the hand and not compete for the pot, no matter if there was bet, raise or poker checking. Thus the player who folds must not place more bets and still he/she can not win even when his/her hand at last turns out to be the highest. In different poker versions the gambler may fold in differently: to indicate the choice verbally or to discard the hand face down to cards which are not used in currant game. As the discards are known as the muck the player option to fold is also called to muck.
